Captain Kirk meets the Doctor

A restaging of the scene in the Star Trek novel My Enemy, My Ally by Diane Duane in which Captain Kirk sees a holographic version of the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) materialize on the Enterprise with the TARDIS. This is a version of the holodeck seen in other Star Trek series. I had wanted to read this book because I heard about this scene taking place!

The two characters also meet in the story "The Doctor and the Enterprise" by professional author Jean Airey, which can be found online here, at a website of the University of Malta. This is the original fanzine version, with all references to both series intact. A later version took out many references to the characters' names for publication. As Airey explains, the website version is her original text and not later versions! The authorized version on the website is very fun to read and find out what would happen if Star Trek and Doctor Who universes came together!

Star Trek 42

Happy 42nd Anniversary Star Trek! I'm looking forward to the next film in 2009! There are a lot of great actors in Star Trek XI as well as fantastic writers, producers and crew. J.J. Abrams, who also produces Star Trek XI, will premiere his new television show Fringe tomorrow, September 9 on Fox at 8 PM (U.S. Eastern and Pacific Time). I'm interested in seeing what the show will be like!

Star Trek Action Figures

Star Trek Action Figures
Star Trek Action Figures, originally uploaded by monikalel42.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Mirror Universe Spock, Captain James T. Kirk, Mirror Universe Worf, Data, Geordi LaForge, Jadzia Dax

The Picard, Kirk, Data, LaForge, and Dax figures are from the Playmates company, produced for Star Trek: The Next Generation, the film Generations and Deep Space Nine. Dax appears in Klingon gear from the episode "Blood Oath" in which she teamed up with former host Curzon's friends to fulfill a promise he made with the Klingons of revenge on an enemy. The other figures are from Art Asylum's recent series of Mirror Universe figures. In the original series episode "Mirror, Mirror" Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura are accidentally transported to an alternate universe, and must convince Mirror Spock to help them get home. Meanwhile, their warlike counterparts are sent to our universe. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine visited the mirror universe several times on the television show. Regent Worf appears in the episode "The Emperor's New Cloak." The action figures by Art Asylum are very detailed and come with an array of weapons and accessories, and are also on a bigger scale than the Playmates figures.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Captain Jean-Luc Picard Action Figure

This action figure was made by Playmates Toys in 1992. In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Picard commanded the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D on its mission of space exploration.

Star Trek Montgomery Scott Action Figure

With a Macintosh SE, similar to the computer Scotty uses in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, after time-traveling to 1986 San Francisco.

Playmates Toys made this figure in 1994 for the film Star Trek: Generations, in which Captain James T. Kirk, Captain Montgomery Scott and Commander Pavel Chekov attend the first voyage of the Enterprise NCC-1701-B. Admiral Kirk falls into the Nexus Ribbon, where he meets Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Chief Miles O'Brien Action Figure

This figure was made in 1994 by Playmates Toys as part of the series that depicted the characters on the space station near the Bajoran Wormhole. Chief O'Brien transferred from the USS Enterprise-D to Deep Space Nine to direct engineering operations and renovate the station after it was abandoned by the former Cardassian crew.

Star Trek Game Review

The computer game Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Fallen, released in 2000, fits well into the series continuity and is like an interactive episode of the show with an action adventure setting. Deep Space Nine is the most story-driven of the Star Trek series, with a complex storyline over its seven seasons, but gamers new to the show can also appreciate The Fallen's self-contained narrative involving the conflict between the two central alien races, the Cardassians and Bajorans, and the quest for some Bajoran artifacts.

There is a lot of gameplay opportunity, as users can do three different versions of the story by controlling Captain Sisko, Major Kira Nerys or Commander Worf. On DS9, the main character can walk around and talk to other people like Commander Jadzia Dax, bartender Quark, Dr. Bashir, Security Chief Odo, mysterious Cardassian tailor Elim Garak and engineering officer Chief O'Brien, but there is less to do there than in the main game levels. Each character has distinctive weapons and self-defense styles. They can also pick up items in the environment like medicine or weapons. Most of the characters are voiced by the original actors from the television series, with the exception of Sisko and O'Brien, adding to the realism. There are also several new characters. The officers have a variety of tasks, including rescuing injured crewmembers, engineering puzzles aboard the starship Defiant and the space station DS9, and challenges on alien worlds. The player is given lots of freedom to explore the environment, and the game provides a good opportunity to experience the life of a Starfleet or Bajoran officer.

The Western and Science Fiction

While the Western genre is not often represented in films today, in the early days of the movies it was one of the most popular story forms. Today, advances in computer technology allow films and television to tell science fiction stories with immersive, realistic effects, but the basic themes of the western and science fiction have a lot in common.
